Sellers Guide

Research

Look on Ebay and through local papers and magazines such as Autotrader to see how much similar cars are selling for. Price your car slightly more than what you expect to get for it, as most buyers will haggle over the price.

Prepare the car

Exterior
  • Repair any minor damage and stone chips
  • Clean and wax the whole car
  • Use a colour restorer such as T-cut on any faded paint work
  • Replace any faulty light bulbs
  • Replace damaged and odd wheel trims with a matching set.
Interior
  • Clean and vacuum the whole interior including the boot.
  • Empty the ashtray and clean out any sweet wrappers etc, from door pockets, glovebox etc.
  • Clear out most of your personnel possessions such as audio tapes, sunglasses, etc.
  • The handbook should be the only item in the glovebox when a buyer comes to view the car.

Engine
  • Top up the oil and water if necessary, and the screen wash.
  • Clean the engine and surrounding areas if extremely dirty, most buyers would expect to see some oil and grease.
Paperwork
  • Make sure you know where the registration document (V5), MOT certificate, service record and other relevant documents are.
  • Put all the documents into a folder or large envelope so they are easy to find and safe.
  • Also keep any receipts for work done or parts for the car with the documents. A buyer would expect to see proof of something like a new engine or gearbox.

Advertising

Place ad in the car
  • Always place a for sale advert in the car you are trying to sell as its free advertising.
  • If you park you car on a public road you may not be allowed to place a for sale ad in your car due to council laws - if you have problems just put the ads in the car when you are with it. An idea quick put up take down ad is a folded piece of paper which folds over the sunvisor
  • Most people look at the price first, so make the price the biggest part of the ad to catch people passing interest.
  • Make sure you put as much information in there as possible, such as when the MOT and tax(I know its on the windscreen but some people are stupid!) are due to expire, any service history, recent work done, any features such as central locking, cruise control, aircon, etc.
  • Make sure you contact details are on correct
  • Place the ads so people can see them, but so they do not get in the way when you are driving.
Magazine & Newspaper Ads
  • Always add a photo if you can
  • Put in the ad as much information as possible
  • Ensure contact details are correct
Ebay
  • Take good clear photos of your car inside and out with an uncluttered background so not to distract buyers.
  • Use more than one photo as this helps to sell, but make sure the photos are not all showing the same side.
  • On ebay there is more room to list information about your car - so make sure you do.

The Sale

  • Expect to get less than the asking price.
  • Derogatory comments and remarks should be taken light heartedly as they are usually used to try and lower the price.
  • Cash is best for payment. If you take a cheque, do not release the car until the full payment clears.
  • Building Society cheques and Bankers Drafts should be treated with caution as they are not guaranteed, verify them before releasing the car.
  • Even if somebody has left a deposit do not commit yourself until you receive full payment.
  • Keep telephone numbers of interested buyers incase the sale falls through.

PLEASE NOTE - THIS IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY

WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR ANY PROBLEMS YOU MAY ENCOUNTER WHEN BUYING OR SELLING A CAR.
